CCCS: Seek debt advice sooner

14th May 2007

Brits should be more proactive when it comes to seeking out debt advice concerning unsecured arrears, according to the charitable organisation the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS).

Dealing with thousands of requests for debt advice from consumers around the country, the CCCS is in a position to assess some of the financial problems facing the UK and the service suggests that seeking help with debt sooner would be beneficial for many people.

CCCS chairman Malcolm Hurlston said: "Although mortgage payment and other priority debts should always be prioritised when finances are tight, many people on low incomes are leaving it longer to seek independent help or advice about their unsecured debts."

"By the time they contact us their situation is on the brink," he added.

The CCCS' latest debt report claimed that it is households with low incomes which are becoming increasingly at risk of failing to meet their unsecured loan repayments.

In March of this year, the same organisation suggested that the burden of debt management will shift towards more elderly generations in the UK over the coming months and years.
